Blood pressure is written as two numbers. The systolic number is the top number and represents pressure when the heart beats. The diastolic number is the bottom number and represents pressure when the heart rests between beats. Enter both numbers exactly as shown on your blood pressure monitor.

A single reading may not tell the full story. Blood pressure can rise because of stress, exercise, caffeine, pain, poor sleep, some medications or incorrect measurement technique. For better tracking, rest first, sit properly, use the correct cuff size and record repeated readings over time.

Understanding Blood Pressure Readings

A normal adult blood pressure reading is commonly below 120/80 mm Hg. Readings may be described as elevated, stage 1 hypertension or stage 2 hypertension when the systolic or diastolic number rises above common screening thresholds. A very high reading around 180/120 mm Hg or higher requires careful attention, especially if symptoms are present.

When to Recheck or Seek Help

If your blood pressure is higher than expected, sit quietly and repeat the reading after a short rest. If readings remain high, speak with a qualified healthcare professional. If your reading is very high and you have chest pain, shortness of breath, weakness, severe headache, vision changes, confusion or fainting, seek urgent medical care immediately.
