What is Podophyllin Paint 25%? Podophyllin Paint 25% is a potent cytotoxic (cell-killing) topical solution used primarily for the non-surgical removal of external genital warts (Condyloma acuminatum) and other benign skin growths like common warts and skin tags. While many people search for it as Podophyllin cream, this 25% formulation... is a liquid "paint" typically dissolved in a tincture of benzoin base. The active ingredient, Podophyllum resin, works by stopping cell division in the wart tissue. This leads to the death of the cells (necrosis), causing the wart to eventually soften and slough off. Because of its 25% concentration, it is much stronger than over-the-counter treatments and must be handled with extreme care. How to Use Podophyllin Paint Safely This product is highly caustic and can cause severe chemical burns if it touches healthy skin. It is recommended for application by a healthcare professional. Protection: Apply a thick layer of petroleum jelly (Vaseline) on the healthy skin surrounding the wart to create a protective barrier. Application: Use a fine applicator to apply the paint only to the wart itself. Avoid contact with surrounding tissues. Washing Off: You must wash the treated area thoroughly with soap and water 1 to 4 hours after application. Leaving it on longer can cause intense irritation or systemic toxicity. Frequency: Treatment is usually repeated once weekly by a doctor until the warts disappear. Important Precautions Pregnancy Warning: Do NOT use Podophyllin during pregnancy. It is strictly contraindicated as it can be absorbed through the skin and harm the developing fetus. Sensitive Areas: Do not apply to bleeding warts, moles, or near the eyes and mucous membranes. Professional Advice: Always consult a Meddylab pharmacist or your doctor before starting treatment for genital warts to ensure a correct diagnosis.
